She can't vacuum, she can't cook but she can do almost anything else if you know what I mean quote mark

We’ve been looking forward to the rise of the female sex machine for quite some time here at Playboy – it has actually been a long anticipated fantasy of ours since Kelly LaBrock first popped out of the screen in Weird Science, but we never imagine she’d really arrive. Yes, we’re only a few weeks into the new decade but ‘Roxxxy’ has already made her entrance…

Unveiled at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas last weekend, this dark-haired, negligee-clad, life-size robotic playmate comes complete with artificial intelligence and flesh-like synthetic skin. Not quite the perfect girlfriend yet, but when you consider that she comes in a rather perfect five foot seven inches tall, 120 pound package with an adjustable breast-size and has been programmed to debate the offside rule, you’ve got to admit that she’s already looking like wife material.

While that makes up the basics, there are various “personalities” available for punters to choose from; first up there’s “outgoing and adventurous” Wild Wendy, then there’s “shy and reserved” Frigid Farrah, or “matriarchal kind of caring” Mature Martha and S & M Susan, who doesn’t really need any introduction. Fancy yourself as a bit of a player? Go for the whole bunch – although they don’t come cheap – each model, which arrives with a programmable laptop, costs between US$7,000 (£4,350) to US$9,000 (£5,993).

US-based creator Douglas Hines says the aim was to make the doll someone the owner can talk to and relate to, explaining:

“She can't vacuum, she can't cook but she can do almost anything else if you know what I mean.

“She's a companion. She has a personality. She hears you. She listens to you. She speaks. She feels your touch. She goes to sleep. We are trying to replicate a personality of a person.

“She knows exactly what you like. If you like Porsches, she likes Porsches. If you like soccer, she likes soccer.

"Just think about wife or girlfriend swapping without actually giving the person to someone else.”

No one’s saying that Roxxxy is better than the real thing, but she’s definitely the shape of things to come; in his 2007 book Love and Sex with Robots, British artificial intelligence expert David Levy predicts that robots will become significant sexual partners for humans, answering needs that other people are unable or unwilling to satisfy, which, when you think about, isn’t so different from the recently developed 'intelligent' vibrator for women, a device which memorises the patterns of speed and direction that turn a girl on and replicate them time after time, or the 'Fucking Machine', which is basically a dildo strapped to a pneumatic pump.

What does put Hines’ creation ahead of these sex toys though, is the robot’s ability to tend to both physical and mental urges – you can even get Roxxxy to snore (whatever turns you on), which will make her a favourite for fans of existing “virtual girlfriends”, who’ve previously had to contend with the likes of KARI (a program standing for the rather unsexy Knowledge Acquiring and Response Intelligence), who can hold a dirty conversation with you or sympathise about your shitty day at work, but feels a little bit cold and glassy to the touch.

Of course, it’s not ideal that Roxxxy can’t actually walk or even independently move her limbs (she’s no Kristanna Loken in Terminator 3), which makes ‘Frigid Farrah’ live up to her name a bit too much, but she definitely beats a blow up doll – even if she does leave your wallet a little deflated.

We can only imagine what the next decade will bring ¬– although hopefully by then some of those computer geeks creators will have found real life girlfriends.
