The nation has spoken and their favourite food from foreign parts is that from China.

A study published by Mintel found that cuisine from the country is the preferred choice for 83 per cent of people.

Indian food came in second, winning 71 per cent of the vote, while both variations accounted for 70 per cent of the total ethnic market.

Mexican food has also enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent times, growing 20 per cent in the last two years.

Despite the results, sales of Indian cuisine surpassed Chinese by £189 million in the last 12 months alone, suggesting people favour cooking Indian dishes at home.

Emmanuelle Bouvier, senior market analyst at Mintel, said the two traditional favourites have helped blaze a trail for dishes from other regions of the world to prosper in Britain.

"The initial establishment of popular favourites Chinese and Indian cuisine have led to a broadening of the market and increased popularity of different types of ethnic food," he stated.
