Jon Pullen, a former squadron leader in Basra, and a team of service people decided to help troops coming back from the battlefield and asked celebrities what dishes they would serve to their heroes.

Called Food for Heroes, it contains input from various high-profile figures, including the prime minister, who said he would serve Chequers steak pie to Scottish athlete Eric 'Chariots of Fire' Liddell.

Also contributing to the book are Tony Blair, Dame Eileen Atkins, Bruce Forsyth and Sir David Jason.

In other food news, Alpro soya has devised a series of recipes with a tennis theme to mark the beginning of Wimbledon.

The company suggests making a Juicy Deuce smoothie with its alternative milk before enjoying some Nacho Love, which includes nachos, crudités and dips.

Also recommended is its yoghurt ice cream, combined with strawberries, which it calls What A Racquet.

Received a copy of Food for Heroes just two days ago. Have to say, it's actually a riveting read, excellent recipes but even better stories of modern day heroism!quote mark
